OK I have a secret…. I read medical journals and textbooks for fun. Right, maybe that’s not so surprising after all. Even after being forced to read through entire textbooks for school, I still find that I really enjoy reading scientific literature.
That being said, I do enjoy reading fiction and poetry as well. For me it is completely about the use of language and the imagery evoked by the author rather than about the story. I wish I were a better writer myself, which is, in part, what got me to start blogging. I regrettably only get through about one or two novels per semester, if that.
During this virus thing, I got to spend a little more time with the novel I am currently reading. I am absolutely in love, so I thought I would tell you about it.
Anne Michaels is a Canadian poet. The novel is (obviously) written in prose, but has a definite poetic style to it. I would almost, sort of maybe, compare it to Annie Dillard. But different. There are also many references made to science and discovery, which I find fascinating especially since the story is set in the post WWII era. It’s done in the most beautiful way.
I’m not used to providing book reviews and I really don’t think my words can underline what an awesome piece of writing this is, but if you are looking for something to read right now, I highly recommend Fugitive Pieces.
Addendum: while googling to find a picture of the cover, I discovered that a movie version had been made in 2007. Now I feel silly for not knowing that and I’m debating whether or not I want to go out and rent it. I have such beautiful images in my head that I don’t want to ruin them. On the other hand, movies can be really beautiful too.
